Why Is There So Much Protein in Greek Yogurt?

Greek yogurt is loaded with protein. Filtering out the whey (the liquid that collects on top of yogurt) makes the yogurt thicker without losing any protein. As a result, the amount of protein in 1/2 cup of regular yogurt is less than in Greek yogurt.

Consumer Reports states, “With most of the fat gone—powdered peanut butter has about 85 percent less than regular—you’re left with protein and fiber.” That means the calories will be less. However, the grams of protein and fiber are the same.

My favorite brand of powdered peanut butter is PBFIT or PB2. The people at 99 Boulders agree with me. However, they suggest other good brands if you can’t find PBFIT.

I buy powdered peanut butter at Target or Walmart, which is also available online. (paid link) Recently, I saw it in the bulk bins at Winco.

Can I Substitute Regular Peanut Butter for PB2 (Powdered Peanut Butter)?

Combining yogurt with regular peanut butter can be challenging, especially if you do it by hand. But, as it turns out, powdered peanut butter mixes into yogurt more quickly and smoothly than actual peanut butter.

Using regular peanut butter will increase the fat and calories considerably. I’m not saying it isn’t good–just letting you know.

Variations

  • Do you have a sweet tooth but don’t want sugar? Stir a little sweetener of your choice into your bowl of yogurt.
  • Sprinkle a few slivers of semi-sweet or dark chocolate on top if you like.
  • If you are feeling decadent, squirt a little whipped cream on top.
  • Top your yogurt with chopped Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (paid link) if you want a treat.

Ingredients
 

  • 1 cup (227 g) unflavored 2% milk Greek yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons powdered peanut butter PB2 is good
  • 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar or your favorite sweetener (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon chopped 85% chocolate or your favorite chocolate (optional)

Instructions

  • Mix 1 cup (227 g) unflavored 2% milk Greek yogurt, 2 teaspoons powdered peanut butter, 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon granulated sugar, 1/4 teaspoon (¼ teaspoon) vanilla extract together until smooth.
  • Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon chopped 85% chocolate or your favorite chopped chocolate bar. Nutritionals are figured using 85% chocolate.

Notes

If we have it, sometimes we will squirt a little whipped cream on top of the yogurt before we sprinkle it with chocolate. It’s a naughty pleasure!
The recipe is written for plain powdered peanut better. If you can find powdered chocolate peanut butter, you can leave out the cocoa powder.

    I have always loved plain Greek yogurt, sometimes I eat the yogurt as is but mostly I add my own fruit, honey etc for flavouring.
    recently I bought a big jar of dry peanut butter & looking for ways to use it I found & tried this recipe of yours minus sweetener & vanilla then topped with stem ginger cookies it was yummy

    Sorry. This didn’t work for me. I made it as directed with the sweetener and without the 85% chocolate. It was much too tart. I doctored it by nearly adding 4x as much PB2 and sweetener (and I don’t tend to like things overly sweet, but it was needed to get past the tartness from the yogurt). I doubled the cocoa and vanilla. As another commenter suggested, a pinch of salt helped to boosted the flavour of the PB. It became palatable, but I’ll be looking for another recipe for my PB2.

        *** Update. I’ve upped my review to 3 stars (from 1) as it ended up tasting pretty good, but needs a lot of modifications for my liking. After my modifications, I froze it to make ice cream using my Creami and the icecream result was rather good. So I think I’ve found a recipe with Greek yogurt, PB2 and chocolate that is pretty tasty. Thanks!

    1. Hi Laurie,
      Real peanut butter is difficult to stir into yogurt. Try it and see what you think. I prefer the texture of the PB2 since it’s easy to make it silky smooth without destroying the thick texture of my yogurt.

      I have a scientific way of adding anything to my yogurt. One spoonful, taste. Another spoonful, taste, and so on until it’s perfect.

  11. Thank you for this recipe! I have been making it without the chocolate for my dessert each night. I stick it in the freezer for about an hour and it is such a treat (reminds me of a Wendy’s Frosty). I am on WW Blue Plan and it is only 1 point made with nonfat Greek yogurt 🙂

  12. Hello, I have been a Fairlife chocolate milk fan for years. Never have enjoyed yogurt until I read your information about using chocolate milk. A friend gave me a yogurt maker and I successfully made Greek yogurt. Then I used Fairlife chocolate and it was wonderful. I make it every week.
    Why do I have so much more when? And so much thicker liquid in the whey as well? I get beautiful yogurt (which I strain in a cut off stocking foot.) I add Smuckers all natural peanut butter, saving my chocolate peanut butter powder for regular yogurt.

I think you could put peanut butter and chocolate on just about anything and it would be delicious. 🙂 I’ve had PB2 but not the chocolate version- it’s now on my grocery list though I know I’ll have to go into town to get it!     This is also my favorite new treat with a few additions. I use the regular PB2 (I didn’t know there was a chocolate version,) in lite vanilla greek yogurt. I do add the packet of sweetner, about 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract and instead of the chocolate shavings, I add a tablespoon of carob chips. One more addition – a sprinkling of sea salt…not much, but a sprinkle. I find yogurt to have a bit of a flat taste without it. For me, this is a real treat. I ate it at Thanksgiving instead of a piece of pumpkin pie! 🙂 Sometimes I strain the greek yogurt through a coffee filter if it’s a little looser in consistency than I want. Other brands are “stiff” enough.
