I’m excited to be giving away a brand new Apple I-Pod touch 8G  in celebration of the 3-month anniversary of this little blog. What a great present this would be — to yourself or someone you love.

“Salad in a Jar” is a baby in the blog world — still growing, changing, burping, hiccuping and causing some sleepless nights. It has been a steep learning curve, a time-sucker and full of mistakes and discoveries. ON THE OTHER HAND…I have had a great time with the Tuesdays with Dorie group, enjoyed making new friends and reconnecting with old friends and found a new hobby (and place to waste my money) in food photography. My family enjoys eating all the food too — even if there is a piece or a spoonful missing!

Entering is easy. Leave a comment on this post. Since I love salad, tell me your favorite salad to eat on Thanksgiving. If you don’t do salads, then tell me your favorite dessert. That’s it. Nothing else needed.

To my friends and family who hesitate to leave comments:  make up a silly name or use your initials. You can be anonymous. Be sure you enter a valid email address (which will not be shared). The winner will be chosen at random.

Thank-you for not entering more than once. I’ll close the contest this Saturday night, November 21st at 10:00 CST. Winner will be announced and emailed Monday, November 23.

Best wishes to all who visit this site and thanks again for your encouragement and comments.

Romaine

Note: This contest is not sponsored by anybody but me.  Unfortunately, Apple has not yet discovered Salad-in-a-Jar. But I wish.

I love your blog, website and recipes. My favorite Thanksgiving “salad” is my great-grandma’s recipe for pineapple marshmellow salad. Looks horrible but taste to die for. Happy Thanksgiving! I made my family the Chicken and green bean stir fry and they are sold!!! Thanks so much

52 barbara Huddleston November 17, 2009 at 2:52 pm

Its a green jello with pineapple and pecans. My Grandmother made it every year for Thanksgiving and never for any other meal or holiday. I make it myself but its not the same.

53 juliette November 17, 2009 at 3:21 pm

My favorite TG salad is marinated cucumber slices.
thanks!

54 Laura November 17, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Although I am not a fan of canned jellied cranberry at Thanksgiving. I have discovered that fresh cranberry orange is a great combination. I love the fresh chunky taste. I love your site and am looking forward to reading and taking part in it for a long time to come! Keep up the good work. Have a great holiday season!

My favorite salad to make for almost any occasion is Cole Slaw Salad.

58 Katrina November 18, 2009 at 9:22 am

Ooh, favorite salad? Tough as I LOVE salad about as much as goodies! ;)
Just had one at a cooking class that was divine! Mache (sp?) lettuce, really good thick bacon, gruyere cheese and walnuts with a dressing that was made with cream. It was heaven! I’ve got the recipe if you want it. (I made it at home and just used spring mix lettuces.)
Favorite dessert? Also though! I love a darn good chocolate chip cookie!

My favorite salad is the “green salad” that my Grandmother, Mom, and Joan make during the holidays. It’s actually jello with the white lumpy stuff in it and pecans. Sour cream? no… I don’t know what that white lumpy stuff is but the green salad is great. I get big helpings at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Wish Joan was here she could tell me what that stuff is. I don’t make it I just eat it.

Hey, congratulations on a very beautiful web-site. Can’t believe it’s been a year already. I love to read your site – makes me hungry!

I almost forgot: my favorite salad for Thanksgiving is a cranberry and orange salad that Nancy makes – YUM!

61 rick queary November 18, 2009 at 12:46 pm

62 Rita Graham November 18, 2009 at 12:50 pm

My favorite salad for Thanksgiving is my husband’s favorite as well. It’s “orange stuff” which is comprised of cottage cheese, orange jello, mandarin oranges, pineapple, pecans, and cool whip.

63 Krisfree_99 November 18, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Growing up, my mother would always make Watergate Salad for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I am now required to bring that same salad to Christmas w/my in-laws, so I continue the tradition.

Congrats on your website, it looks great!

64 paul jackson November 18, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Yummy! Can’t wait to share this with my wife!

65 Lisa November 18, 2009 at 12:59 pm

Neat site! I’ll be visiting often. Favorite salad…a delicious pea salad that my Grandma makes. Thanks!

66 Jon November 18, 2009 at 12:59 pm

I love a good greek salad with feta, romaine, tomatoes, red onions, and of course kalamata olives.

67 Sharon Trucker November 18, 2009 at 1:01 pm

What a great idea – i’ve never heard of anything like this before. Thanks for the idea.
No great salad ideas but I do love to bake – most anything.

68 Cindy November 18, 2009 at 1:28 pm

My favorite Thanksgiving salad is one my mom makes with cherry pie filling, cool whip, pecans, pineapple and marshmallows. MMMMMM! Now that I think about it, it qualifies as dessert, too!

69 Linda November 18, 2009 at 2:14 pm

My husband’s mother used to make a pistachio pudding, marshmallow, and pineapple salad. When I make it now, we think of her.

70 Brad November 18, 2009 at 2:19 pm

Very nice site! My Thanksgiving salad will use romaine and boston lettuce, grated carrots, a variety of toasted seeds and nuts (sesame seeds, pine nuts, slivered almonds), grated parmesan, cherry tomatoes, and a balsamic vinagrette. Thanks!

Oh, I need to have my 7-up salad! It is light and refreshing, and counteracts the heavier holiday foods. Besides, it’s the only way I’ll eat lime jello!

73 Bongo Rod November 18, 2009 at 3:14 pm

On the radio, I live in a huge coconut on a tiny island, with talking coconuts, and a cocobot, so, for dessert, nothing with coconut, please.

Oatmeal raisin cookies with vanilla ice cream, ahhhh, now we’re talkin. Uh oh, here come the hungry coconuts!

I love the green jello salad my Grandmother used to make for Thanksgiving. Just thinking about it reminds me of her.

75 Cori Westphal November 18, 2009 at 6:02 pm

I love a good taco salad. My fave!

76 Michelle November 18, 2009 at 8:27 pm

I make a Strawberry Cranberry Christmas crush salad. My family and I love it because it’s cold and a pretty red color that reminds us of the holidays!
Your contest is very nice, how thoughtful of you!

77 Amanda November 18, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Can’t say that salad is a major staple on our Thanksgiving menu. Although what qualifies as a “salad”? Isn’t it just a mixture of several different ingredients? In that case I would say the overdone green bean casserole. Maybe not gourmet or a traditional salad but always a winner on my table!

78 Poppins November 18, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Favorite salad to eat: Mom’s Cranberry Jello Salad

Favorite Dessert: Anything I didn’t make!

79 christine November 18, 2009 at 9:44 pm

my favorite salad, that’s clearly: broccoli. never had it in germany, love it here!

80 BrieAunna McConnell November 18, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Congratulation on your success. My favorite dessert on Thanksgiving is sweet potato pie.

81 Jane November 18, 2009 at 10:10 pm

Heard you were Suzette’s roommate…she is my sister! Love her Cranberry Jellied Salad for Thanksgiving.

82 Mary W. November 19, 2009 at 12:28 am

I can’t get enough of spinach salad with candied pecans, cranberries, mushrooms, strawberries (or pears, or apples, or mandarins), Parm-Reg, sliced almonds, and red onion shaves with poppyseed dressing. That’s hard to beat!

83 Tara November 19, 2009 at 8:13 am

My favorite Thanksgiving and year round salad – weird but delicious.
Fresh pineapple chunks, cashews, chopped dates and chopped avacado. That’s it. Delicious. You either love it or hate it. I appreciate the people who don’t like it because it’s more for me!!!

84 Janell November 19, 2009 at 8:48 am

I have a recipe that my sister gave me for a cranberry jello salad. It has fresh cranberries, pineapple, pecans, celery and it’s all set in cherry jello! I don’t think I can have turkey & dressing with out it!

85 Suzette Stephens November 19, 2009 at 9:02 am

Hey Paula!! Wow, it’s been along time! My sister sent me your link & I’m so glad about it. You have wonderful ideas and can’t wait to really get into this more. I have a fantastic cranberry salad recipe from my late beloved mother-in-law for cranberry salad that is a hit every year. Fresh cranberries, pecans, pineapple, an orange in jello. LOVE IT!

86 baileybakes November 19, 2009 at 10:52 am

A great salad for Thanksgiving (though I’ve never had it on Thanksgiving) is one of my favorites, green leaf lettuce, green apples, craisins, toasted pecans, feta cheese with a vinaigrette. Delish!

87 Kelly November 19, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Orange Cloud is our traditional Thanksgiving salad. It’s not a ‘green’ salad, it’s made of cottage cheese, cool whip, jello (I prefer peach) and pineapple (optional). Family favorite!

88 Katie November 19, 2009 at 10:54 pm

I have been sitting in hospital with my husband for the last week and love the recipes on your blog and cannot wait to get home and try them out. THANKS so much… Katie

I like Strawberry Avocado Salad with walnuts and a homemade dressing of honey, olive oil, and sugar. Fresh and fruity!

90 Jan November 20, 2009 at 8:09 am

I have loved reading your blog, and I have tried several of your great recipes! Your photos are always terrific! My favorite salad (full of calories!) is made with cherry pie filling, Eagle Brand, pineapple chunks, bananas, pecans, and whipped topping.

91 Cindy November 20, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Your blog is so professional, it makes me ashamed of mine! Such beautiful photos of your food….makes my mouth water! I will be trying your recipes. My favorite Thanksgiving dessert is my mom’s chocolate pie. We all would fight over the last piece!

92 Amie November 20, 2009 at 1:16 pm

I love all of the yummy recipes you make and then bring to work so that we can be your guinney pigs!!! My favorite salad is pea salad (I like this anytime I can get my hands on it, not just Thanksgiving!!!)

93 Mary Sue November 20, 2009 at 2:02 pm

I am enjoying the recipes and secrets. My family enjoys Broccoli Cauliflower Salad. One holiday I failed to make this popular holiday favorite only to have everyone disappointed, even my sous chef son who works at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
I am anxiously awaiting my Food Saver so I can have salad in a jar too! Again thanks for all the ideas.

94 jennifer November 20, 2009 at 3:18 pm

on thanksgiving, my grandma makes “layered lettuce”, it consists of peas, celery, green onions, bacon, lettuce, mayonaise, and shredded cheese. broccoli and califlower are optional. i don’t care for peas, but every year my gram gets me to eat them by making this yummy dish! gobble gobble!

95 Ginger November 20, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Glad Steve told us about your blog! I need to learn to cook and your blog looks like it could help! :)

96 Margot November 20, 2009 at 9:35 pm

Congratulations on three months of blogging; I can’t believe you’ve only been doing this three months, your blog is so great! We don’t really have a traditional Thanksgiving salad, but just today I was thinking about warm bread salad from the Zuni Cafe cookbook (and how I should make it soon), which is my favorite salad ever.

97 Jay November 20, 2009 at 10:32 pm

I LOVE your idea for salad in a jar! I did it the same way with the same lettuce in baggies. But the jars look like a better way!
My favorite dessert is Million Dollar Cobbler! It’s so easy. – Love your blog. I’m subscribing.

98 Randi November 20, 2009 at 11:24 pm

I really like green salads–but I don’t like to do all the chopping. I discovered your sight while searching for a monkeybread recipe. I’ll have to browse some more.

99 Debbie November 21, 2009 at 12:10 am

Fabulous web site, Romaine! My goodness, what talent. You continue to surprise me. By the way, my favorite salad is pea salad made with thawed frozen peas and slices of eggs.

My best friend introduced me to ‘cranberry fluff’ a few years ago. Hardly qualifies as salad, but delicious!!
