I‘ve been a part of Tuesdays with Dorie for about a month now. I have to say, “I LOVE IT.” Recipes which would normally remain forever ignored become instant celebrities in my kitchen. At least until after the pictures are taken. I’ll confess, most meet an early demise because of my “better in the waste than on the waist” philosophy. But that’s OK. It’s more about the photography for me.
Do you remember when you went to buy your first important camera? Did the sales person ask you, “What do you plan to do with it?” Uh-h-h-h…I don’t know. Take pictures? But after owning my camera for a little over a year, I know the answer. I like taking pictures of food! It doesn’t move. It doesn’t complain. It doesn’t mind if I get up close and personal. It doesn’t scold me if I eat a few bites or crumbs (unlike my conscience which is not nearly as polite). When I make a mistake or something doesn’t turn out, it’s easy to hide. Food lets me manipulate and control it. Not many people will do that for a picture. Never mind that food doesn’t smile.
Isn’t this a gorgeous tart? It was fun but time consuming to make. I used pecans instead of peanuts in the caramel layer, toasted in the microwave, of course. They give the tart a rich, millionaire-candy-like flavor.
When mixing the crust, I had to add a small amount of water to get it to come together, but it turned out fabulously. Otherwise, I went straight by the book. Click here for the crust recipe.
Thanks to Karla at Chocolate Moosey for selecting this recipe. You can find it for yourself here.
By the way, what is your favorite subject for picture-taking?

Oh my, I need to stop myself from drooling! yum!
Well food of course! LOL Except my pictures this week stink. :-p I’m going to try again when the sun comes up, but for now they are garbage. This tart of yours is perfect looking, the photo should be in the book!
i love taking pictures of food… its just that i have a regular digital camera and i have to tinker with the settings and light and i just haven’t gotten a hang of it yet. in due time i suppose.
beautiful tart
oh how delicious-looking! i love the clear definition of the layers! i’ve still not bought my first “important” camera (sniff-sniff)…one day, maybe i’ll upgrade from a point and shoot, and then i’ll love taking photos of everything!!
This looks fantastic. I love taking pics of oranges, but oddly enough dont really enjoy eating them.
The photos are always stunning – you’re putting it to good use and the tart looks amazing – I love the addition of strawberries (which I assume were eaten as well)! Nicely done this week – so glad you made it and are a part of TWD!
Looks great! You’re taking great photos, I am drooling at my office while looking at your blog!
Oh my, I love that layer of caramel drizzling off the tart’s edge. Delicious!
I love the caramel oozing out of the crust. Looks perfect.
I still don’t know what half the features on my camera are for!
This tart was ok for us – not thrilling, unfortunately.
Your photos are beautiful. I need to learn to use the camera I have. I am always asking my daughter how to do something or other with it. The tart looks delicious, I like that you used pecans instead of peanut.

This was absolutely delicious! (as evidenced by my dad eating 2 pieces of this rich dessert!) Thanks for sharing!
I feel the exact same way about taking pictures of food!
Your tart looks delectable. I thought this recipe was wonderful!
It really looks beautiful! The photo of the slice with the fork is the best!
Oh YUM! The first photo with the fork is cookbook perfect! Maybe Dorie should borrow it for a replacement picture…it is that good!~ Love the pecans for a twist…Very Nice!
Your ganache looks like edible velvet! Great job! As far as pictures are concerned, It seems like the most intricate recipes refuse to take good photos. For a while I was more concerned about getting onto Foodgawker and TasteSpotting but I had to remind myself that the joy of baking is in the baking itself.
So I try not to worry too much about photography. Bars and brownies are much easier than a flat cookie though.
Can I ask what type of camera you have? I’ve been using a hand me down and it is no bueno. I just joined TWD as well. I’ve been pretty good about either giving away the desert or halving the recipes (except for the cream cheese brownies – and they were so good).
Love your blog – that soup looks delicious.
Rachel, I use a Nikon D80 with a 60 mm macro lens. Love it.
Paula–your tart looks divine!! Great job! As always, your photos are outstanding!
Oh my, this is perfection! Your tart crust couldn’t be any more beautiful. I didn’t think of adding water to mine, but it’s a great idea.
My hand is better than it was the other night (thanks for asking). I’ll probably loose some skin on a couple of my fingers but it could have been much worse. Lesson learned.
Wow – the tart is beautiful as are the photos! Your talent shows in both areas!
I have often thought about whether or not I was strong enough to implement your “better in the waste than on the waist” but so far have not had to take that stand…. having two teenagers and their friends around usually gets things out of the kitchen in a pretty fast… ha ha ha!
Food pics are ‘easy’ but not easy. And you are right, they follow directions beautifully.
And beautiful is your tart.
