Tuesdays with Dorie: Dulce de Leche Duos

dulce de Leche cookies

Another sandwich cookie this week.  I’m not complaining.  I’ve already professed my love for cookies with frosting/filling.

dulce de leche halves 2 Spread one half of cookie with Dulce de Leche.  Spread another cookie with melted bittersweet chocolate. Put them together and you get….

dulce de leche cookie between tongs

a delightful and very sweet sandwich cookie.

I don’t care for Dulce de Leche straight out of the can so I added powdered sugar and milk to make it into a frosting instead of filling. I thought the chocolate added interest but the family actually preferred a single cookie with a little frosting on top.

For the recipe, see Beansy Loves Cakes or buy Dorie’s gorgeous book, Baking: From My Home to Yours.

P.S. In case you were wondering, Dulce de Leche is carmelized sweetened condensed milk. Y’know, the stuff we used to cook in the can and then pour over sliced bananas in a pre-baked pie shell. Haven’t thought about that dessert since I listened to Carpenters record albums on my Hi-Fi stereo player.

Now THAT’s a combination – and a great looking sandwich cookie. You always seem to find a wonderful “variation” of your own. Now, to get my Carpenters LPs out of the closet….

I used Nutella.

Fabulous.

I made a buttercream to go in mines and spread chocolate on it, too. I thought the dulce de leche would be too thin by itself. After seeing other’s photos I see it wouldn’t have been as thin as I thought. Wonderful job.

I LOVE the cookie equation!! Hilarious. Ironically I wasn’t a fan of both the chocolate+dulce de leche. I guess you CAN have too much of a good thing. Go figure!

I’m not wild about canned ddl either. It’s missing something–salt??? But definitely these need chocolate. I really played around with ‘em. (surprise)
I thought they were best today with a little Nutella.

I thought about dark chocolate as well and decided against it, I was way to tire to melt chocolate last night. But, OMG, I love the Nutella idea.

Love your pictures.

Gorgeous pictures! Gorgeous cookies! I haven’t heard the Carpenters in ages. :)

Dulce de Leche frosting? Excellent idea! Your variation looks wonderful.

BTW: I was inspired by your sweet potato fry dipping sauce and made a curry version (I didn’t have any Cajun spices) – it was a huge hit.

A little chocolate can only make everything better, right? Thanks for baking with me!

Great combination of fillings!! I found the cookies to be too sweet with filling thought

23 Jill March 25, 2010 at 8:59 am

Great variation! These were a hit at my house, too.

24 Mimi March 25, 2010 at 10:47 am

Great job. I thought abut making a butter cream with the DDL, but everything seem so sweet already. We actually preferred then as a single cookie also.
